In the First HP book, Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone, Harry encounters a mirror that reflects “neither knowledge nor truth” but the deepest desires of one’s heart. (The Mirror of Erised.) Even though I haven’t recently read the book or watched the movie, a random thought hit me the other day: for us, failure can be that mirror.
Failure often reveals to us what our heart most sincerely desires and most desperately seeks. When things are going well, and we are experiencing success in all our endeavors, it can be tough to discern the motivations of our heart, or whose glory we are pursuing. But when we experience failure, our inner response can reveal those attitudes which are otherwise hidden.
Failure can be a mirror that helps us to see the true condition of our hearts.
