In one of the 6 pregnancy books I’m reading (no lie!), I found this quote:
“Motherly women and fatherly men acting as wholesome symbols of strength and righteousness in a family setting of mutual love and respect continue to be essential to progress in any civilization.” — Robert Bradley, Husband-Coached Childbirth
Wow. I loved that. It can relate to a number of family structures, and isn’t even necessarily talking solely about parents. I’ve encountered “motherly women and fatherly men” who are not parents, but they still make an impact on those around them.
Check out these Scriptures on the parental nature of Paul’s ministry:
1 Thess 2:7 & 11-12 (ESV)
7But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.
11For you know how, like a father with his children, 12we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
Galatians 4:18-19 (ESV)
18It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!
Motherly women and fatherly men have a great purpose to fulfill in the world as they are symbols of strength and righteousness to those around them, even if the Lord never plans for them to biologically birth a child.
